How to Remove Fingers from Scans: Scanner and Phone Solutions

Introduction

If you’re wondering how to remove fingers from scans, you may not need to rescan the page. Depending on the scanner or app you use, you can remove fingers during image processing or clean them up afterward.  When a book fights back against the scanner, you may have to press the page down with your fingers. That can leave your hand visible in the image, even when the text scans fine. Rescanning the page may seem like the obvious fix, but it may be unnecessary. Some scanners and scanning apps can erase fingers from the finished scan. The steps below show how to remove them without going through the scan again.

1. Why Do Fingers Appear in Scans?

Fingers can show up in scans simply because you need to keep the page in place. It doesn’t always mean something went wrong with the scan.

• Holding down book pages: Book pages can lift or move while you’re scanning them, so you may need to hold them down with your fingers.

• Using a smartphone to scan: When you’re scanning with your phone, your fingers may slip into the camera’s view while you hold the phone or the document.

• Curved pages in thick books: Pages in thicker books can curve near the spine, making it harder to capture the full page. You may need to hold the page flat, which can leave your fingers in the scan.

• Accidental placement: You may also put a finger in the scanning area without noticing while adjusting the page or scanner.

You don’t always need to rescan the page to fix this. Some scanners and scanning apps can remove fingers from scans after the image has already been captured.

2. How to Remove Fingers from Scans with a Book Scanner

Open book pages can curl upward, so you may need to hold their edges down while scanning. 

With CZUR scanners, you can do this in two ways: use the supplied finger cots and select With Finger Cots, or use your fingers directly and select Without Finger Cots. The selected mode tells the software whether finger cots or bare fingers are being used, so it can process the captured image accordingly.

Put the CZUR finger cots on your thumbs and press them against the middle of the page edges. Before scanning, select With Finger Cots mode. The software detects the finger cots and removes them from the processed image.

This works well for bound books because their pages often rise or curve near the spine. Holding the edges down keeps the pages in place while the scanner processes the page curve and removes the finger cots. CZUR's instructions also specify finger cots for Facing Pages scanning.

You can also hold the page edges with your fingers instead. Select Without Finger Cots mode before scanning, then place your fingers in the positions shown in CZUR's scanning instructions.

The processing mode needs to match how you're holding the pages. With Without Finger Cots selected, the software processes the image accordingly and removes the fingers from the final scan.

3. How to Remove Fingers from Scans with a Phone

The process varies a bit between apps, but the overall steps are usually the same as long as you know where to find the feature. Place the document or book page on a flat surface and try to keep your fingers out of the frame when taking the photo. If a finger is already in the scan, look for a tool such as Finger Remove, Object Removal, or Erase, depending on the app. Once you activate it, you’ll usually select the area you want to clean up, possibly tap OK, and let the app process the image. In the end, you’ll usually get an option to save the cleaned copy.

Adobe Scanner

Adobe Scan can detect fingers that appear in the captured page and remove them with Magic Eraser.

1. Open the Adobe Scan app.

2. Scan your document and wait for Adobe Scan to process the page.

3. If the app detects fingers along the page edges, it highlights them and prompts you to remove them.

4. Tap OK to remove the detected fingers.

5. Review the processed scan to make sure the fingers are gone and nearby text remains intact.

6. Use the Magic Eraser toggle to turn the removal effect on or off.

7. Use Undo or Redo to adjust the edit, or select Revert to restore the original scan.

8. Retake the scan if Adobe Scan warns that the removal may affect nearby text

Scan.Plus

Scan.Plus includes a Finger Remove tool that can detect and remove fingers from scanned documents. You can use it before saving a new scan or apply it to a document you’ve already saved. The exact steps may vary depending on your device and app version. 

1. Open Scan.Plus and scan your document.

2. Tap Next in the bottom-right corner.

3. Open the Image tab.

4. Tap Finger Remove to remove any fingers detected in the scan.

5. Tap Done on iOS once the removal is complete.

6. Tap Save in the top-right corner to save the edited scan.

7. To edit an existing scan, open Documents from the bottom-left corner.

8. Select the document you want to edit.

9. Tap the three dots in the top-right corner, then select Edit.

10. Open the Image tab and tap Finger Remove.

11. On iOS, tap Done, then Save. On Android, tap Save to apply the changes.

iScanner

iScanner includes an Erase Fingers tool for removing fingers from scanned pages.

1. Scan your document in iScanner.

2. Tap AI Enhance at the bottom of the screen.

3. Tap Erase Fingers from the AI enhancement options.

4. Let iScanner remove the detected fingers from the scan.

5. Review and save the cleaned scan.

4. Scanner vs. Phone: Which Method Is Better?

The better choice depends less on image quality and more on how much control you need during the scan. A dedicated book scanner handles page shape, alignment, and repeated captures with less manual adjustment. A phone gives you more freedom, but you’ll need to manage those factors yourself.

Use a book scanner for bound books

A book scanner makes more sense when the page doesn’t naturally stay flat. Its capture area is built around open books, and many models can flatten page curves as part of the processing. Some also have specific modes for handling fingers, so you can hold the page down without leaving them in the final scan.

This becomes more useful as the page count grows. Once you’re scanning dozens or hundreds of pages, small adjustments on each shot add up. A dedicated scanner can keep the process more consistent from one page to the next.

Use a phone for occasional or awkward scans

A phone works well when you only need a few pages or don’t have access to a book scanner. It’s also more flexible for material that’s difficult to position on a scanning bed, such as a passport or a single page from a thick book.

The tradeoff is that more of the setup depends on you. You may need to hold the page open, keep the camera aligned, and deal with fingers or uneven page edges during editing. Finger removal tools can reduce some of that extra work.

5. Tips to Avoid Fingers in Scans

You don’t always need to keep your hands completely away from the page. The better approach is to control where they appear and how much of the page they cover.

• Hold the Edges, Not the Content: Keep your fingers close to the outer edge of the page so they cover as little content as possible.

• Keep Fingers Away From Key Content: Don’t cover text, numbers, signatures, or images. Finger removal can’t restore anything hidden underneath.

• Use the Scanner’s Processing: For curved or stiff pages, hold them flat and let the scanner software handle the fingers and page curve.

• Use A Support for Long Scans: A book holder or page support can keep the book open and reduce the need to use your hands.
